As part of its effort to power more of its data centre servers with renewable energy, Google has this month committed to buy power from a NextEra wind farm in Oklahoma.

The formation of a power purchase agreement for energy produced at the Minco II Wind Energy Center comes weeks after the search engine giant invested $100m in another US wind project.
The search engine company has agreed to buy over 100MW of renewable power from the wind farm, which is still in development in Grady and Caddo counties.
This is the second power purchase agreement Google has signed with NextEra, having already bought 114MW of power from its Story II Wind Energy Center in Iowa.
The conglomerate recently injected financing in Caithness Energy’s Shepherds Flat wind farm in Oregon, after investing $168m in BrightSource Energy’s Ivanpah concentrated solar project in California.
Information technology companies’ high profile investments in renewable energy recently came under the spotlight when a report from Greenpeace highlighted that they are not doing enough to prioritise access to clean energy in their power-hungry infrastructure.
The How Dirty is Your Data? report said that Google and IBM demonstrated the most comprehensive approach to minimising their carbon footprint. But Google came second to Yahoo! in the clean energy and coal intensity indices.
Mike O’Sullivan, senior vice president of development for NextEra Energy Resources, said, ‘With the support of customers like Google Energy, we’ve built our wind fleet from fewer than 500MW a decade ago to nearly 8.3GW – the largest fleet in North America today.’
The Minco II Wind Energy Center, which will constitute 63 turbines made by General Electric, is expected to be operational by the end of this year.
