Global engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has drawn down initial funding following a financial close in November to monitor construction of the first wind farm in Honduras.

The consultancy is acting as lender’s engineer for the $290m Cerro de Hula wind farm, which is being developed by Globeleq subsidiary Mesoamerica Energy to address power shortages and support the government’s efforts to promote renewables.
Its role will be to evaluate the project and advise the project lender, US Export-Import Bank, on risks from a technical perspective and mitigation measures, the company told NewNet.
The US Export-Import Bank and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration are providing full financing for the project.
Mott Macdonald said it will check that the project, which is due to be finished in early 2012, is progressing within budget and on schedule.
The 120MW wind farm is due to be built close to the Honduran capital city of Tegucigalpa with 51 wind turbines manufactured by Gamesa.
