Electronics giant Sharp is set to invest $56m to expand its Welsh solar manufacturing plant in Wrexham, which will cater to growing European demand and boost the company’s stature in the region.

Three new assembly lines will be created as a result of this new investment, which will double the company’s production capacity of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels to 500MW.
The company said it is also planning to add several hundred additional workers to the 750 it employs at the site.
‘As a global company, Sharp could have chosen anywhere to invest, but selected Wales because of its tech-savvy workforce and government support for business,’ said Geraint Jones, head of The Americas for the Welsh Assembly Government.
‘Sharp’s location in Wales helps reach Europe’s fast-growing solar panel technology market.’
This month, Sharp is also launching a new renewable energy academy at its Wales facility, to train workers to install solar panels that will power homes and businesses.
The plant was originally established in 2004 with an annual capacity of 20MW, and has undergone additional extension since.
