UK power company Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has withdrawn an application request made to the Scottish government for a proposed 72.5MW wind farm in Ayrshire.

The company cited construction and planning challenges as the reason for the decision. It also said the designation of the site as a European Special Protection Area after the application was made added additional complexity.

SSE said it remains committed to the development of more onshore wind facilities and recently applied for a 171MW extension to a development in Clyde.

David Gardner, director of onshore renewables for SSE, said, 'This site had the wind resource and the site dynamics to be a very good project, but having listened to the concerns of the key consultees we have concluded that the reasonable action to take is to focus our resources on onshore wind farms elsewhere. We are grateful to all those who took part in the project consultations.'
