The Vietnam Development Bank has agreed a $1bn loan with the US Export-Import Bank to provide financing for wind energy generation in the Mekong Delta.

According to reports, Ex-Im Bank will also serve as guarantor when VDB looks to make future borrowings from international banks.

One of the first projects to receive this financing will be the 16MW Bac Lieu wind farm in the Mekong Delta. In July of this year, GE announced it was to supply turbines for the project. The wind farm's proposed second phase could see it add up to 120MW of capacity.

Located about 200km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the Bac Lieu project will be the first wind farm in the Mekong Delta.

In 2009, GE increased its investment in the future of Vietnam by establishing a new manufacturing plant near the seaport city of Hai Phong. The facility produces wind turbine components, and the first wind turbine generators built there were shipped in May of 2010.
