A coalition of 24 governors from both major political parties in the US have called on President Barack Obama to provide a more favourable business climate for the deployment of renewable energy.

The governors called for an extension to a tax exemption scheme currently in place for renewable energy, which is set to expire next year.

A letter signed by the governors was sent to the White House last month and has since been made public by the Governors Wind Energy Coalition.

'Although tax credits for wind energy have long enjoyed bipartisan support, they are scheduled to expire next year,' the letter said.

'Wind-related manufacturing will slow if the credits are not extended, and some of the tax credits' benefit will be lost if Congress pursues a last-minute extension. It is important to have consistency in policy to support the continued development of wind manufacturing in the US.'

The governors' letter also calls for the establishment of a combined intergovernmental state-federal task force and the expansion of the Department of Energy's renewable energy programmes.

In addition, they call for improved collaboration for siting new wind turbines and identifying transmission and grid integration priorities.
