Danish transmission specialist nkt cables has been contracted by German energy company 50Hertz to install high voltage subsea cables for the Baltic 2 offshore wind farm. The deal is valued at DKK750m (€95m) and equipment for the project will be manufactured at a facility in Cologne.

The offshore site will be situated in the Baltic Sea approximately 32km north of the island of Rugen and will have an installed capacity of 288MW. It is expected to be operational by 2013. This is the second German offshore facility located in the Baltic Sea and Siemens has been contracted to supply turbines.

Thomas Hofman-Bang, CEO of NKT Holding, said, 'We are pleased to continue doing business with 50Hertz Offshore. As Baltic 1 was nkt cables' first subsea cable project out of the new factory in Cologne, we have made some initial experience that both parties now will prosper from in the Baltic 2 project.'

Transmission links to offshore projects are becoming increasingly lucrative with ABB recently winning a $1bn contract to connect facilities in the North Sea to Germany and First Reserve launching a $1.2bn fund to invest in this area.
