Packaging company SCA and Norwegian renewable energy developer Fred.Olsen Renewables are to build a wind farm in north Sweden through a joint venture vehicle.

The wind farm will be built on SCA land in Västernorrland in northern Sweden, which is estimated to have 2TWh of potential wind farm power production.
The move represents SCA’s shift in focus towards renewable energy, according to its head of energy Åke Westberg.
Westberg said, ‘This project enables SCA to further strengthen its concentration on wind power, which is entirely in line with the group’s strategic focus on the increased production and consumption of renewable energy.’
Fred.Olsen Renewables’ managing director Torger Lien said the developer views the collaboration as an opportunity to deliver renewable energy to its Nordic clients. It will take a majority 60 per cent stake in the company and be responsible for arranging its financing.
Preparation for the joint venture has begun with wind measurements in the highlands area of Näsåker in the municipality of Sollefteå, which will continue in the coming year, the company said.
SCA Energy forms part of the SCA Forest Products business group, which is charged with developing the company’s renewable energy production. Aside from wind, it is also involved in biofuel production and controls 2.6 million hectares of Swedish forests.
Fred.Olsen Renewables, a Bonheur and Ganger Rolf subsidiary, has operated in the wind space since the 1990s and is involved in four onshore wind projects.
