Solar-powered plane developer Solar Impulse will attempt to fly its fuel-free aircraft to Brussels airport in its first international flight.

The flight will be ready for take-off in early May and will be conducted under the patronage of the European Commission.
The airplane will first be displayed in the capital city of Belgium in the final week of May, before flying to the Paris Air Show in Paris-Le Bourget that runs in June.
The European Commission has been a long supporter of Solar Impulse, having publicly sponsored its pioneers Bertrand Priccard and André Borschberg in 2008.
Solar Impulse has accomplished a solar-powered flight that flew for over 26 hours through both day and night without using fuel.
‘This time, we have a real airplane – flying – proof that new technologies can reduce our dependence on fossil energy- to help us continue supporting the European institutions’ efforts to adopt ambitious energy policies,’ said Piccard.
The group described the task of making its first international flight as a ‘big technical challenge’, which its team has been preparing for months.
The task will involve anticipating and studying every eventuality in anticipation of the international air traffic network at Brussels Airport, which is the 14th largest European airport.
