South Korean conglomerate Samsung has increased its slice of the clean energy pie through acquiring a bunch of wind power projects in the Canadian province of Ontario from renewable energy developers Acciona and Boralex.

Samsung Renewable Energy and its partners have an agreement with the province to provide 2.5GW of new renewable energy to the region. They have agreed to establish four manufacturing facilities in Ontario under the agreement to build renewable energy technology for inland projects and exportation.
The group plans to combine the wind projects it jointly bought in partnership with Pattern Energy with a large-scale wind farm south of the Kent region.
The 270MW wind farm in the regional municipality of Chatham-Kent is estimated to produce enough electricity each year to power more than 73,000 local households.
‘These acquisitions complete the land needed for our South Kent wind project, which Pattern and Samsung are developing this year,’ said Mike Garland, CEO of Pattern Energy.
The companies are focused on finalising the necessary permitting requirements for the projects, having already secured dedicated transmission capacity for initial projects under the agreement with the province.
They have also agreed to develop more than 500MW of wind power using turbine components manufactured in Siemens’ new turbine factories in Tillsonburg and Windsor.
Pattern and Samsung recently acquired land from Suncor Energy and a nearby wind project development from Northland Power on which to build its planned wind projects.
