The California Energy Commission yesterday officially approved proposals to introduce the country’s most stringent energy efficiency standards for TVs.
The new standards, which will be implemented in 2011, will require that all new TVs with a screen size less than 58” sold in the state in 2011 will consume 33% less energy and 49% less by 2012.
The Commission estimates that the new regulations with save $8.1 billion in energy costs over the next ten years – equivalent to the power required by 864,000 homes.
“The real winners of these new TV energy efficiencies are California consumers who will be saving billions of dollars and conserving energy while preserving their choice to buy any size or type of TV,” says Commission chairman Karen Douglas.
According to the Commission, over 1000 models already on the market meet the new regulations, and they won’t affect stock already in stores or consumers’ existing models at home.
