US utility San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has signed a 20- year power purchase agreement for 315MW of wind energy to be generated at Pattern Energy’s Ocotillo wind energy facility in California.

Pattern said if all government approvals are provided on a timely basis, it will complete the project by the end of next year to coincide with an in-service date for 500kV Sunrise Powerlink transmission line.
James Avery, senior vice president of power supply for SDG&E, said the renewable resource was precisely the type of project the transmission link was designed to support.
‘This project presents a unique opportunity for a significant volume of environmentally-friendly power to be delivered to our customers, reaffirming SDG&E’s ongoing commitment to secure regional renewable resources for the San Diego area.’
The contract still requires approval from the California Public Utilities Commission but when it gets the go-ahead will be the fourth renewable energy agreement SDG&E has formed in the past nine months.
Together, those deals amount to 600MW of clean energy. All of which will be transmitted via the Sunrise Powerlink.
SDG&E has previously committed to sourcing one third of its electricity from renewable energy sites by 2020.
