Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa has chosen the UK to be the centre of its offshore wind business and will invest €150m between now and 2014.

The news comes after the UK government has committed to spending £60m to establish world-class offshore wind manufacturing at ports sites.
The company proposed to open a research and development centre for offshore technology as well as build a turbine manufacturing plant, with port logistics, operation and maintenance to be based at various ports around the UK coastline.
Gamesa said 1,000 jobs will be created directly as a result of the investment as it develops 5MW and 6MW-7MW turbines to become a leader in North Sea projects in the coming years.
Gamesa also intends to base the global headquarters of its offshore division in London, which will also handle sales, project management, finance and administration for the offshore business.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said he wants the country to be a world leader in the offshore wind industry and supports Gamesa’s announcement.
‘That’s why we’re committing public money to ensure we have the infrastructure that attracts major manufacturers to come here and build their offshore wind turbines.
‘The commitment shown by companies like Gamesa who want to come to the UK and invest is good news for jobs and growth and good news our clean energy future. This announcement is very welcome indeed,’ he said.
