US solar company SolarCity has completed several photovoltaic (PV) installations as part of a project that will see 16 new arrays added to public buildings in San José, California.

The initiative will see 2.5MW of PV technology added to facilities for free, with the city purchasing the power at a discount rate.

In addition, SolarCity is investigating the potential to add panels to a further 14 sites throughout the city.

Chuck Reed, Mayor of San José, said, 'San José is a national leader in solar installations and these projects will bring us one step closer to reaching our Green Vision goals.

'Installing solar on city facilities is not just good for the environment; it will also save the city money and support the region's clean tech economy.'

Lyndon Rive, CEO of SolarCity, added, 'The city of San José is proactively embracing opportunities that more American cities should be taking to save money and reduce pollution by using renewable energy. These projects are wins for San José's economy and environment.'
