A key UK planning body is studying an application by the green arm of European utility RWE to build what would be the world's largest offshore wind farm.

RWE npower Renewables' application for the Triton Knoll wind farm is now under review by the Infrastructure Planning Committee.

The site is located off the east coast of England, and if it gets the go-ahead it will be three times bigger than the current largest installation, the recently-opened Walney project.

RWE npower Renewables, according to a report in Reuters, will be the sole owner of the project, which is set to comprise 288 wind turbines.
