Spanish clean energy developer Acciona has completed installation of a 38MW, €223m wind farm in Poland, the company's first in the country.

The facility is located in the Golice Municipality, west Poland, and consists of 19 2MW turbines. It was supported by matched funding from the European Union's Cohesion Fund.

Acciona said the development should help catalyse the company's footprint in Poland, a country that is experiencing strong growth in the wind energy sector. The Polish government has set a goal of generating 15 per cent of electricity form renewable sources by 2020.

Last year, installed wind plants increased 53 per to take Poland's total combined capacity to 1,107MW. The trend has continued in 2011 with the country expected to have between 10,500MW and 12,500MW of turbines installed by 2020, according to European Wind Energy Association figures.

Acciona has been expanding its global business profile and in November won a tender to build a wind farm in Costa Rica, expected to cost $125m. The company has facilities in six European countries as well as the US, Canada, Mexico, India South Korea and Australia.
