Danish energy company Dong has purchased the right to develop the Borkum Riffgrund West 1 offshore wind project in the German North Sea from Energiekontor for around €30m.

If the company decides to build at the location it could potentially erect up to 80 turbines with a total capacity of 400MW. The site is nine miles away from Dong's existing German offshore development Borkum Riffgrund 1 which is scheduled to become operational in 2014.

Anders Eldrup, CEO of Dong Energy, said, 'A robust pipeline of projects in key offshore wind markets is essential for Dong Energy's ambition to maintain our position as the leading player in the offshore wind industry.'

Dong has offshore interests in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands and at the end of October announced a collaboration with Vestas to test 7MW turbines in the waters off Frederikshavn, north-east Denmark. In September it secured a loan worth €280m form the Nordic Investment Bank for the construction of the 400MW Anholt offshore facility.
