French solar company Tenesol will install 500 photovoltaic (PV) systems and 250 converters as part of the €30m Millener smart grid project located on the islands of Corsica, Guadeloupe and La Reunion.

The development is funded by the French government and will allow homes to supply and manage their electricity supply through the integration of renewable, micro-generation systems. In addition to the installation of renewables, the project will involve the roll out of 1,000 energy management systems. The PV systems that Tenesol is supplying will have a maximum capacity of 3kW and are scheduled to be implemented by 2012.

Benoit Rolland, managing director of Tenesol, said, 'The scale of this project shows the French government's commitment to smart grid networks that work with renewable energy. The use of solar energy storage systems will empower households and enable individuals to manage and generate their own electricity supply. It provides an electricity supply that is sustained and controlled.'

A consortium of energy and transmission companies who will co-develop the Millener initiative was announced earlier this month.
