Swiss engineering company Foster Wheeler has been contracted to supply solar stream generator systems for two thermal solar projects in Spain.

The first is an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) arrangement with UTE Africa Solar for a 50MW development in Cordoba, south-west Spain. Foster will supply steam generating components for the project that will be integrated with a concentrated parabolic trough thermal plant.

The facility uses molten salts to store the sun's energy and provide additional hours of plant operation during the night and in cloudy periods. Delivery of the equipment is expected for the second quarter in 2012.

The other order is from UTE Termosolar Olivenza, the EPC contractor for a 50MW solar thermal plant located near the border of Portugal. The development will use thermal oil as the heat transfer fluid and the technology supplied by Foster will be similar to that used in the Africa project. The equipment is scheduled for delivery at the start of next year.

Jesus Marti, CEO of Foster Wheeler in Spain, said, 'Undoubtedly, these awards are recognition of our commitment to solar energy and our client's confidence in Foster Wheeler as a reliable thermal solar equipment supplier. Since 1973 we have been a leader in the solar thermal power market and are thrilled to be a part of its fast paced future.'

Last year, Foster Wheeler was awarded contracts to supply equipment for two thermal projects in Cadiz, Spain and also received a similar order from Total in the United Arab Emirates.
