Norwegian energy giant Statkraft has partnered with Swedish company Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) to construct a 60MW wind farm in central Sweden. The Stamasen 1 project is the second wind plant that Sratkraft is developing in the country with SCA.

The facility will consist of 26 turbines with construction starting in September and operation scheduled for 2012. It is expected to cost €108m. Statkraft has a licence to develop 115MW of wind power in the Solleftea and Stromsund municipalities but due to the limited capacity of the transmission grid in the area, the developments will be divided into stages.

Christian Rynning-Tønnesen, CEO of Statkraft, said, 'Wind power is an important environmentally-friendly contribution in the transition to a future low-carbon society. We are very happy to start the construction of another wind farm, and to strengthen growth in a strategic focus area.'

Statfraft is also developing a 52.2MW site in the north of Scotland and in July contracted turbine manufacturer Nordex to supply 21 units for the project. Statkraft said the £60m development will strengthen its position in the UK and expects the Baillie Wind Farm to produce electricity by 2013
