Energy giant E.ON has said it is actively seeking local suppliers within the UK’s north-east region to help build its 230MW Humber Gateway wind farm.
The 77-turbine development was greenlit by the UK government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change and is expected to generate enough electricity to power 195,000 homes.
‘The next generation of large-scale offshore wind farms like Humber Gateway have a vital role to play in the UK’s future energy mix,’ said Paul Golby, CEO of E.ON UK.
The company has joined the Renewables Network, an organisation that includes local small businesses who could act as suppliers, according to local media.
Because of the physical size of many wind turbine components, they are often manufactured relatively close to the point of installation – in contrast to other goods, like solar panels, which are easily shipped around the world.
