US electric utility PNM has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for renewable energy projects, which will decrease its dependence on fossil fuels and help it meet Albuquerque’s renewable portfolio standard.
Through the RFP, PNM will earn renewable energy certificates for each kilowatt hour it generates or buys from renewable energy sources.
Local legislation has set out that the company must increase its renewable generation to ten per cent of its retail energy this year.
Cynthia Bothwell, director at integrated resource planning at the electricity provider said, ‘PNM wants to evaluate all alternatives that may be available to meet the increasing renewable requirements.’
PNM said it was also seeking biofuels that can offset dependence on natural gas in its existing generation facilities.
The RFP it was issued is for renewable energy sources that can produce clean energy no later than 2014.
