US integrated solar electricity provider BlueChip Energy is to supply state power utility Progress Energy Florida with solar power from the Sorrento Eagle Dunes project under a new power purchase agreement.

The Sorrento Eagles Dune solar plant is a utility-scale facility that is still under development in central Florida. Its developer said the project will be the largest private solar plant in the state and one of the largest in the US.
The project is estimated to have a total capacity of 40MW and generate more than 64 million kWh of power annually.
BlueChip said it plans to develop the solar farm in stages, building the first 10MW in 2012. It estimates that the project will require using 174,000 monocrystalline and polycrystalline photovoltaic solar panels it plans to source from Advanced Solar Photonics.
The developer said it recently bought land to enhance the bankability of the project and is now applying for zoning approvals, having completed environmental studies.
‘This large-scale solar project has the distinct advantage of being near the population base that it will serve. Combined with the BlueChip Energy vertically-integrated business model, the project will demonstrate renewable energy at close to grid parity. Private solar plants are key to the future for helping help Florida and America meet clean energy goals,’ said Demitri Nikitin, BlueChip Energy president and CEO.
