Spanish wind turbine manufacturer and project developer Gamesa has announced plans to invest more than €60m in building new manufacturing plants in India next year.

The wind turbine manufacturer said it aims to achieve annual sales growth of 166 per cent in India between 2009 and 2013, forecasting its manufacturing capacity in the country to exceed 800MW in 2013.
India already accounts for eight per cent of Gamesa’s global wind turbine sales, following the launch of its first manufacturing facility in the country early last year. The aggregate capacity of the wind turbines it sold in India in 2010 hit 196MW, as it increased its local workforce nearly five-fold following the launch of the Chennai plant last February.
Gamesa’s renewed growth plans for the India market come in reaction to an unanticipated rise in demand for its products in India after opening its first plant, which it had to boost from 200MW to nearly 500MW within one year of its launch.
The company said it plans to localise production of its 2MW turbines in the country in 2012, as part of an expansion that is part of its wider growth plan to target fast-growing markets. In order to fulfill its growth strategy, Gamesa said it intends to recruit 100 new engineers in India by the end of the year, potentially doubling that figure the following year.
As part of its India strategy, Gamesa said it intends to open additional manufacturing plants in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu in the coming years through joint ventures, which will produce nacelles and towers at several locations in the states.
This year it is also set to open a turbine blade factory in north-west Indian state Gujarat, which will produce blades for its small turbines, with an initial production capacity of 300MW. Gamesa said the anticipated factory may eventually be extended to produce components for higher capacity machines including its 2MW turbine model.
Last year, it sold wind turbines with an aggregate capacity of 196MW in the country.
