Gamesa, the world’s second largest wind turbine maker, is to supply nine 850kW turbines to Pioneer Generation for the Mount Stuart wind farm in New Zealand.

The wind 7.7MW project will be built 15 km (nine miles) east of Milton on New Zealand’s South Island.
The contract includes manufacturing and shipping the generators and supervising installation and commissioning. This is Gamesa’s first contract in the Asia-Pacific wind power market, although it has placed bids for other projects.
The wind farm is scheduled to become operational in 2011 and will produce electricity for the local grid operator, OtragoNet, a subsidiary of Pioneer Generation.
‘Gamesa’s strategy in the Asia-Pacific region includes establishing a firm presence in the medium-long term,’ said Ramón Terrones, Gamesa’s regional director for Asia Pacific and Oceania.
Gamesa plans to establish a subsidiary for the Asia-Pacific region this year, offering project services as well as wind turbine operation and maintenance, with its head office in Singapore. The company also hopes to establish a technology centre there.
New Zealand has an ambitious renewable energy plan which envisages 90 per cent of power generation coming from renewable sources by 2025.
