Enel Green Power & Sharp Solar Energy, a joint venture set up in mid-2010 between the two parent companies, has built a 5MW photovoltaic plant in Italy.
Located in the south of the country, the project deploys Sharp’s single crystalline solar cell modules. In total, it has the capacity to generate about 7.5 million kilowatt hours of clean energy.
The joint venture company has already announced its intention to build a number of power plants throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It has the stated aim of installing 500MW of solar power plants by 2016, with all using thin-film panels produced at a jointly owned factory.
This factory is currently under construction and will begin operations towards the end of this year. When fully operational it will have the capacity to produce 480MW.
The new Calabria plant will supply enough energy to power 2,800 homes.
