Hawaii-based concentrating solar developer Sopogy has inked a contract to buy two organic rankine cycle systems from Pratt & Whitney that it will operate in tandem with solar collectors in a 5.5MW project.

Sopogy will use the organic rankine machines to capture heat energy concentrated by the collectors to generate electricity as part of the Hawaii-based solar thermal project. The machines are fuelled by a transfer liquid that is heated by solar power.
The company said the new systems will be installed in the project in the latter part of this year.
‘Combining our organic rankine cycle unit with Sopogy’s solar collectors is a powerful step in energy efficiency,’ said Pratt & Whitney Power vice president Chuck Levey.
‘This duo is an attractive alternative to photovoltaic cells and solar steam plants.’
