Energy utility npower and smart grid specialist Flexitricity have partnered to deliver a new service in the UK for energy consumers to earn income through reducing energy consumption and balancing energy generation with demand.

UK energy company npower’s newly launched SmartSTOR service, which can tap unused energy from standby generators and electricity consuming equipment.
‘Many businesses are sitting on untapped sources of revenue,’ the companies said.
The service will also apply to combined heat and power generators and hydro generators, providing opportunity to access untapped revenue.
It will allow businesses to generate over £100,000 per year from an average-sized industrial site, the companies said in a joint statement.
SmartSTOR is estimated to generate up to £15m in gross revenue for npower customers and prevent between 90,000 and 225,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year, according to its director of industrial and commercial markets David Cockshott.
Cockshott said, ‘We work closely with our industrial and commercial customers to help them manage the twin pressures of energy costs and carbon emissions – so helping them unlock revenue from their existing energy assets is the next logical step.’
SmartSTOR is the latest addition to npower’s range of innovative services to help businesses meet their energy management objectives.
It enables companies to demonstrate to their stakeholders that they are using their assets in the most cost effective and environmentally beneficial way, according to the power major.
‘Flexitricity is delighted to be extending the reach of its smart grid system through this partnership with npower and looks forward to helping npower’s business customers generate revenue whilst reducing the UK’s carbon emissions,’ said Flexitricity CEO Ron Ramage.
‘Our system is Britain’s most advanced smart grid deployment and this announcement demonstrates our ambition to work with leading power companies.’
Flexitricity’s smart grid communicates directly with electricity generating and consuming equipment on npower clients’ sites via secure connections to its operations centre in Edinburgh.
It said this allows it to increase generation and reduce consumption when the National Grid is over-supplied or energy scarce.
