European utility E.ON has selected Power Plus Communications’ (PPCs) broadband powerline technology for its smart grid project.

E.ON Westfalen Weser is trialling smart grid technology across its network of 1.3 million customers in Germany.
PPC is a provider of broadband powerline communication (BPL) systems technology, which E.ON has used to connect substations in the project using the existing power grid.
Henning Probst, CEO of E.ON Westfalen Weser, said, ‘With the help of BPL technology we have had an outstanding opportunity to achieve a future-proof communications infrastructure in our medium voltage grid. With it, we have become technological forerunners and have become highly flexible in our application.’
Within E.ON’s smart grid project, PPC’s medium voltage technology facilitated the extension of Cisco’s Connected Grid solution.
The companies said that through Cisco, PPC and E.ON combing their technology, they have ensured the evolution of fast and efficient smart grids that are controlled on an internet protocol basis.
