India’s largest turbine manufacturer Suzlon Energy has installed more than 5GW of wind energy generating capacity in India, underlining the country’s fast-growing domestic market.

The company now accounts for nearly half the country’s total wind installations, having cumulatively added more than 5,000MW of wind power capacity to more than 1,500 customers across 40 sites in eight of the country’s states.
It has installation bases of more than 1,000MW in each of the states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujurat.
Suzlon’s clients include Tata Group and Reliance Group, as well as Indian Railways and the State Bank of India.
The company has a workforce of 9,000 employees in India and eight manufacturing facilities across the country.
Suzlon chairman and managing director Tulsi Tanti said, ‘In just over a decade, India’s wind market has grown from just around 50MW per year to nearly 2,000MW per year, and we at Suzlon are proud to have led this.’
Under India’s National Action Plan for Climate Change, it has a target to source 15 per cent of electrical power from renewables by 2020.
Tanti said, ‘We have already secured one fourth of our target, and wind is the highest contributor at 70 per cent of the country’s total grid connected renewable power capacity; this is a testament to Suzlon’s accomplishment, and marks an important milestone in India’s commitment to building a low carbon economy.’
India is the world’s fifth biggest wind market with a cumulative installed base of over 12,000MW and the total estimated onshore wind power potential in the country according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy totals more than 48,000MW.
Suzlon said the sector is poised for accelerated growth driven by demand for power, strong support for renewables by the government, a sound policy framework and a positive investment outlook.
The company said it has maintained a 50 per cent market share in the country for 12 consecutive years.
