The world’s installed wind capacity will reach close to 200GW by the end of the year, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) said.

A five-year outlook by the GWEC forecasts global wind power capacity will double between 2010 and 2014 to amount to more than double 400GW.
The vast majority of this rise will be due to growth by China, the US and Europe but new countries will also enter the global wind map, it said.
Steve Sawyer, secretary general of the GWEC, said, ‘We do expect the US market to be down this year as the low level of orders we saw during the financial crisis work their way through the system.’
But he added that stronger growth in China will make up for this decline.
‘Overall, wind energy continues to be a growth market, weathering the economic crisis much better than some analysts had predicted.’
GWEC said with half of the growth now happening in emerging and developing countries, countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Chila – as well as northern and Sub-Saharan Africa – are all exhibiting strong growth.
