Vestas has secured two wind turbine orders from the UK and US, despite announcing plans to axe 1,000 in Europe due to stunted growth in the region while reporting its third financial quarter results.

News of the cull came despite the company receiving the highest number of orders in its history during the quarter.
The first of its new orders is from global diversified renewable energy project developer RES to supply and install 14 of its V80 turbines at the Kelburn wind farm in North Ayeshire, Scotland, which has the ambitious renewable energy target of 80 per cent renewables by 2050.
The contract must be fulfilled over a short timeframe, requiring Vestas to supply, install and commission the turbines together with a Vestas SCADA system by mid-next year and includes a ten-year service agreement.
President for Vestas Northern Europe, Klaus Steen Mortensen, said the new UK order, ‘represents a solid foundation for future contracts in this key market for RES.
‘RES is one of our key accounts and this order further strengthens our relationship,’ he said.
Gordon MacDougall, UK & Ireland COO at RES, added, ‘Scotland is leading the UK in onshore wind and this project demonstrates its continuing success in attracting investment. There is great potential for further development across Scotland.’
The second of Vestas’ latest wind turbine orders is a larger contract from state-owned utility Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems in the US, which has ordered 32 wind turbines for the Horse Butte wind project it is developing near Idaho Falls, from which it intends to buy all the energy for its participating members.
‘Adding an additional wind resource to our power supply portfolio is a smart choice that gives our members more options,’ said Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems’ general manager Doug Hunter.
This order represents Vestas’ first sale of the V100 turbine type with1.8MW capacity, the company said.
It also has a short timeframe, with delivery due to start this year and commissioning planned for the latter half of 2011. The project size may also increase to 99MW from 57.6MW in the near future, Vestas said.
Vestas Americas’ president Martha Wyrsch said, ‘[Idaho] has strong wind resources and has great potential to be a high-growth state for wind power.’
The 30-year-old utility is a subdivision of the state of Utah with a strategic plan to finance, develop, acquire and construct various diversified power projects to serve its service territory.
