The first commercial, grid-connected tidal energy project is being deployed in the US off the coast of Eastport in Maine.

Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) is deploying its first tidal energy device into Cobscook Bay this summer, thanks to a $10 million investment from the Department of Energy.

The device will harness the tides in the Bay of Fundy, where 100 billion tons of water flow in and out of the bay each day with the force of 8000 locomotives.

Initially, the Cobscook Bay pilot project will provide enough renewable electricity to power 75-100 homes but ORPC has plans to expand the project and install enough devices to provide power for more than 1000 homes.

The effort has been recognised by Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who commented:

"The Eastport tidal energy project represents a critical investment to ensure America leads in this fast-growing global industry, helping to create new manufacturing, construction, and operation jobs across the country while diversifying our energy portfolio and reducing pollution."
