Germany’s first commercial offshore wind farm is now operating in the Baltic Sea and expected to make a major contribution to the country’s power supply in the coming months.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended the launch of the 48MW EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg wind farm, which is expected to supply more than 50,000 households in the country.
Built by Siemens Energy approximately 16km north of the Darss peninsula, the EnBW Baltic 1 wind farm consists of 21 wind turbines, each with a capacity rating of 2.3MW.
Siemens will also build EnBW’s second offshore wind farm in the Baltic, the Kriegers Flak project, which will be four times the size of its latest creation and is slated for grid connection in 2013.
‘This is an important milestone in the use of German offshore wind power. Onshore, Germany was a pioneer in wind power – and now it’s important to rapidly tap the huge offshore potential,’ said René Umlauft, CEO of the Renewable Energy Division at Siemens.
Germany is expected to become home to between 20GW and 25GW of wind power capacity by 2030.
Siemens said it has secured orders for the construction of five offshore wind plants in German waters to date, also including the 108MW Borkum Riffgat, 320MW Borkum Riffgrund 1 and 288MW DanTysk projects.
Over the last 20 years, the company has installed more than 600 wind turbines with a combined capacity of more than 18GW in European waters.
