Heavyweight power developer Dong Energy has called upon ambitious countries to compete as front-runners of renewable energy businesses.

Thomas Dalsgaard, head of group regulatory affairs at Dong, said, ‘It will be the most ambitious countries that will host the industrialisation of the renewable sector.
‘There is very solid momentum in the industry and strong competition amongst the suppliers of renewable energy. And there will be equal competition between countries to be the champions of the renewable industry.’
Dong Energy is a major player in the offshore wind operators in the UK, holding a 50 per cent stake the UK’s largest planned offshore wind project, the London Array.
Recognising that a green transition is spurred by national and regional arrangements, Dalsgaard said the developer is encouraged by the number of countries that are continuing to pursue an ambitious low carbon agenda despite the absence of a global agreement on carbon pricing.
Dalsgaard said, ‘In offshore wind we’ve seen a large amount of growth and professionalising in the industry in the last two years. We must continue that growth of renewables as a business to make costs even more competitive against fossil fuels.’
As a producer of oil and gas, Dong Energy plans to halve its carbon emissions by 2020 and has invested £3.7bn in energy developments the UK since 2005.
In the Crown Estate’s licensing round, the company was awarded the licence to further extend the capacity of the 234MW Burbo Bank offshore wind farm that it fully owns as well as expanding the 750MW Walney offshore wind farm in the East Irish Sea that it jointly owns.
