Power systems developer Alstom has secured an order worth over €200m from Scottish Power Renewables (SPR), a subsidiary of Spanish energy group Iberdrola Renovables, to build a 217MW extension to the Whitelee wind farm in Scotland by May 2012.

Alstom will install, commission, operate and maintain 69 of its most powerful offering, the ECO 100 wind turbine, and six of its lower-output ECO 74 wind turbines, under the new contract.
The Whitelee wind farm extension is one of the largest onshore wind power projects in Europe and represents the first large-scale project for Alstom’s ECO 100 wind turbine, which the company described as ‘a major milestone’.
The ECO 100 turbines have a capacity of 3MW, compared to the 1.67MW capacity of its ECO 74 turbines.
Alstom and Iberdrola Renovables have also formed a collaborative agreement to install wind projects in Spain over the next two years, with a 100MW project pipeline in 2011 and a further 49MW in 2012.
The new contracts represent the deepening of the relationship between the two companies, which are also working on the joint development of floating deep offshore wind technology.
‘This order represents a major technological milestone, while strengthening our relationship with SPR and Iberdrola Renovables, for whom Alstom has installed six wind farm projects in Europe totalling 185MW,’ said Alfonso Faubel, vice president of Alstom Wind.
Alstom, which already has a track-record in producing power systems for the rail sector, has recently solidified its commitment to renewable energy through the construction of an array of wind projects including a 26MW onshore wind farm for Pennant Walters at Maesgwyn in South Wales, according to its head of power Stephen Burgin.
The company also recently completed a 15MW wind farm at Clachan Flats in Scotland for SPR and to meet its target of generating up to 35 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020, the UK will need to ramp-up its installed onshore wind capacity nearly five-fold to 14GW from the current installed capacity of around 3GW, Alstom highlighted.
With sales of more than €23bn during the 2009/2010 reporting period, Alstom provides integrated power plant solutions and services for a variety of energy sectors, as well as power transmission services.
