One quick press of a finger on the camera’s shutter button might actually have the power to change the world -- or at least help people notice what’s going on in other parts of the world that they would otherwise hardly be able to see.

On Saturday, a street exhibition in İstanbul will highlight just that fact.
“Consequences by NOOR,” a collection of striking snapshots from various parts of the world by acclaimed documentary photographers from the Noor photo agency, will open tomorrow, on World Environment Day, right in the heart of the city -- İstiklal Street.
Featuring 100 photographs by a multinational group of nine photographers from the Amsterdam-based agency, “Consequences” documents the devastating effects of climate change around the globe.
The nine series by nine photographers, taken in the United States, Poland, Greenland, Darfur, Russia, the Maldives, Brazil, Canada and India, highlight everyday realities experienced by millions of people, including hunger, disease, conflict, forced migration and loss of livelihood and human rights.
The snapshots in the series “show not what might happen in the future, but what is happening today, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the issues at stake,” reads a statement on the Noor Web site, www.noorimages.com.
The Noor photo agency bills the collection “a showcase for creativity in photography and an eyewitness record of the causes and the humanitarian effects of worldwide temperature changes.”
The exhibition was first launched during the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen in December 2009. Currently on a world tour, the collection was on display during Spain’s Alternatilla Festival in Majorca before its İstanbul stint.
Saturday’s unveiling of the series in İstanbul’s Galatasaray Square will also serve as the opening event for the Intercultural Dialogue through Art Days organized by the Beyoğlu Municipality, which is among the sponsors of the İstanbul show along with Greenpeace, Nikon Europe, the Galata Photography Center and the Dutch Consulate-General in İstanbul.
“Consequences by NOOR” will remain on display until June 20.
