Water efficiency must not be neglected in the UK government's new home and business energy saving initiatives, urge the Energy Saving Trust and Waterwise.
According to the two organisations, domestic water use accounts for 23% of heating bills, amounting to around £160 a year on the average energy bill.
The Energy Saving Trust and Waterwise are launching new guidance to help water companies and providers of the Green Deal home efficiency scheme and Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which requires suppliers to help their customers cut energy use, help householders improve the water efficiency.
The guidance sets out simple measures and advice on water efficiency measures that providers can integrate into energy efficiency retrofit offerings, while increasing consumer engagement with water use issues.
"There is a great opportunity for Green Deal and ECO schemes to include assistance from the local water company and make water efficiency a prominent part of their Green Deal offering," says Andrew Tucker of the Energy Saving Trust.
