Australian environmental management company EP&T Global has been selected by the BBC to help it reduce energy use at its new broadcasting centre in Salford.

The contract covers an initial six-month pilot project at MediaCityUK, which will use EP&T Global's dynamic monitoring and optimisation systems to help identify energy use hotspots and conflicts.

The systems are based on EP&T Global's EDGE software, which remotely collects and analyses real-time data, and collaborative management approaches.

EP&T Global's chief executive and founder Keith Gunaratne says its approach could help the BBC "unlock significant energy, financial and emissions savings" to become more sustainable.

Other clients using the company's systems like British Land have achieved savings of 27% in a single year.

The BBC had set itself the target of cutting energy use and carbon emissions 20% by 2012/13 compared with a 2007/8 baseline, but has reportedly had to extend its deadline to 2016.
