IBM's energy programme netted savings of $43 million in electricity costs and 7.4% of the company's total use for the year.

According to the company's ninth annual Corporate Responsibility Report, the savings - which are enough to power almost 34,000 homes for a year - were the result of 2300 conservation projects at more than 364 IBM facilities around the world.

The results are part of IBM's commitment to reduce energy use and eliminate 1.1 million MWh of energy consumption by the end of this year.

Since 1990, this effort has reduced electricity consumption by 5.8 billion kWh, avoided nearly 3.8 million metric tons of CO2 emissions and saved the company $442 million.

The company has been recognized by the European Commission for its efforts on energy efficient data centres and recently unveiled a hot-water cooled supercomputer in Switzerland that cuts energy use by 40% compared with air cooled systems.

"In order for sustainability to be more than a passing fad, it must be sustained over the long term," says Wayne Balta, vice president of IBM's environmental affairs. "From the impact of our operations and products on the environment, to how we manage our global supply chain, environmental leadership is a strategic imperative, backed by the conviction that good environmental management makes good business sense."
