Swedish energy company Vattenfall is planning to build a 576MW offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The company is intending to begin construction on the project in 2014 and is set to invest SEK26bn ($3.7bn) in wind power between now and 2015. Vattenfall purchased a licence for the site from German company Sandbank Power for an undisclosed sum.

The project is called Sandbank 24 and permits are in place for 96 large turbines at the site with the opportunity to add 40 more to that total.

Anders Dahl, head of BU Renewables at Vattenfall, said, 'With Sandbank 24 Vattenfall is actively supporting the ongoing energy turnaround in Germany. We are convinced that offshore wind power will play an important role in Germany in the future and that this young industry will become successfully established in Germany as well.'
