German wind energy developer wpd has secured €45m financing from German bank KfW IPEX for a 36.8MW development in Croatia.

The Ponikve site, located in the south-east of the country, will consist of 16 turbines supplied by German company Enercon. Wpd will install the units with Enercon contracted to provide maintenance on the facility for 15 years. It is the third project in Croatia that wpd has worked on.

Hartmut Brosamle, CEO of wpd, said, 'Two weeks ago, works for the foundations began and the turbines will be on site in the spring of 2012; grid connection is set for the third quarter of the year. We are confident that we will be able to implement the extensive approvals in a short period of time so that we can put the turbines into operation until the end of next year.'

In September wpd announced a joint partnership with Stadwerke Munchen through which the two companies plan to invest €1bn in projects throughout 12 European countries and Canada with a combined capacity of more than 4.2GW.
