JAKARTA: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (right) offered support for South Korea’s candidacy to host a climate change summit in 2012 because of the latter’s strong leadership and commitment in environmental affairs.
Yudhoyono said strong leadership was needed to host the 2012 climate summit, as countries should produce a new treaty on emission-reduction targets to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.
The support came during his meeting with South Korean special envoy Han Seung-soo (left) and a delegation that included Korean Ambassador for climate change Son Seung-hwan at the State Palace on Wednesday.
“President Yudhoyono sees South Korea as the best candidate to host the 18th conference of parties (COP),” said presidential special staff on climate change Agus Purnomo after the meeting.
He said President Yudhoyono would also lobby heads of state from other countries to back the candidacy of South Korea.
South Korea’s delegation delivered a letter from South Korean President Lee Myung-bak regarding its bid to host COP 18 under summthe United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
