US-based wind project developer First Wind’s Kahuku Wind project on the island of Hawaii has started operating and will now deliver power to Hawaiian Electric under a long-term agreement.

The 30MW wind farm at Oahu’s North Shore features a battery storage system and has the capacity to generate enough renewable energy to power up to 7,700 Oahu homes each year.
The Kahuku project was developed in partnership with Hawaiian Electric, energy storage system developer Xtreme Power and the US Department of Energy.
Construction of the Kahuku Wind project was assisted by a $117m loan guarantee from the US government that was granted in part because of the innovative battery technology it uses.
As part of a long-term power purchase agreement between Kahuku Wind and Hawaiian Electric, First Wind will sell renewable energy from the project to the utility at contracted prices.
The project features 2.5MW Clipper Liberty wind turbines and the largest energy storage system integrated with a wind farm, a dynamic power resource utility-scale battery developed by Xtreme Power.
RMT led construction on the project and is also expanding First Wind’s Kaheawa Wind project that serves nine per cent of Maui and its Sheffield Wind project in Vermont.
Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie said, ‘Renewable energy projects such as Kahuku Wind are significant as they advance Hawaii’s pursuit of energy independence.’
