Siemens Energy has launched the SWT-2.3-113, a new direct drive gearless wind turbine for low to moderate wind speeds.
The turbine features an innovative drive concept with a compact permanent magnet generator, which requires no excitation power, slip rings, or excitation control systems. This design results in a high efficiency even at low loads.
The SWT-2.3-113 has a capacity of 2.3MW and a 113 meter rotor diameter, which is designed to maximise power production at sites with low to moderate wind speeds.
It is fitted with Siemens’ B55 Quantum Blades, which is designed to increase efficiency and optimize performance. The blade is lighter than previous models but retains the strength of earlier generations. Its been designed to minimise root leakage, provide greater lift, reduce noise levels, and minimise loads.
The SWT-2.3-113 is the second gearless wind turbine launched by Siemens and only requires half of the parts needed for a conventional geared wind turbine Siemens has commissioned and installed five gearless wind turbines in
Denmark and Norway and further projects are planned for the US, Denmark, and Germany.
Henrik Stiesdal, CTO of the Siemens Wind Power Business Unit, said, ‘The first prototypes of our SWT-3.0-101 have been running for more than a year and fulfilling all expectations in terms of reliability and performance.
With its proven lightweight design it’s a secure and profitable investment. Because gearless technology is low maintenance, it maximises our customers’ returns.’
