The European Commission, European Parliament and European Council are meeting later today to discuss revising directives on the energy performance of buildings (EPBD) and energy labelling for home appliances.
After failing to reach agreement on revisions earlier this month, the Swedish EU presidency is now under pressure to adopt revised directives.
The Presidency is proposing a compromise on labelling that would continue discussion on the use of the A to G efficiency scale and could oblige Member States to purchase only the most efficient appliance in public procurement processes.
Discussions will also cover the European Parliament’s call for Member States to be forced to improve the minimum energy requirements in their respective building codes.
According to Reuters reports, the European Parliament is also proposing that all new buildings would have to be zero-carbon from the end of 2018.
The WWF is cautioning the EU not to make hasty compromises that could seriously undermine the future effectiveness of the directives.
