One of the largest UK utilities Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has reportedly witnessed a 20 per cent drop in output from its wind farms during 2010.

The results were due to the country experiencing far less windy weather conditions than normal, it said.
‘Total output of wind energy was 1,314GWh, an increase of 13.5 per cent; however, excluding new wind farms, output of wind energy was down by almost 20 per cent on a like-for-like basis,’ SSE said in a statement.
John Moreton, the founder of solar developer mO3 Power said this highlights that the UK government’s stance must be too promote a mix of renewable energy sources if it is to meet its emissions targets.
‘Currently, government’s stance on renewable energy is underpinned by the rapid expansion of wind farms. If we are to meet our carbon commitments we must have an alternative renewable source to wind: solar power is the obvious answer,’ he said.
But UK Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker has hinted that the feed-in tariffs for solar plants may be reduced in 2012 to limit the number of large-scale projects.
