Energy industry services company Global Energy Group has been named preferred bidder for Nigg yard, in the Highlands of Scotland, and will work to rejuvenate the facility as a hub for the renewable energy industry.

Already a key fabrication site for the offshore oil and gas industries, the redevelopment will look to enhance the Cromarty Firth’s facilities to be attractive across both the traditional and clean energy sectors.
Stan Arnaud, spokesperson for Global Energy Group, told NewNet just how much will needed to be invested has not yet been decided but has already entered a period of due diligence with the aim of completing the sale by April.
It will look to purchase parts of the site owned by US company KBR and secure a long-term lease of the section owned by Wakelyn Trust.
Once these transactions are complete, the group will then intensify its efforts to secure partners and investors for the project.
‘We are looking at phased improvements as we go along,’ Arnaud said. ‘We have been negotiating for ten months to reach the point we are at now but hopefully we will be able to release figures in April.’
He said Global Energy Group has been a tenant of the yard for a number of years and completes fabrication work for the oil and gas industries in the North Sea and West Africa from the site.
The redevelopment comes at a time when the company is looking to cements its foothold in the renewables market.
‘We are on the cusp of a big development in renewables and we see the site as being a fantastic opportunity for that.
We would like to be in a position to capitalise on what is happening in renewables. We are very keen at attract renewables users to the site while also catering to the oil and gas sectors,’ Arnaud told NewNet.
Global Energy Group’s head offices in Aberdeen and Inverness, and predicts the redevelopment could create in excess of 1,500 skilled jobs.
Nigg yard was last year named as one of the key sites in the Scottish government’s National Renewable Infrastructure Plan and the company’s vision for the site will see it fabricate sub-sea equipment for offshore wind developments; on and offshore wind structure assembly and manufacture turbines.
Roy MacGregor, chairman of the group, said, ‘There is a real window of opportunity for this development. The Cromarty Firth’s important role in the oil and gas industry is well-established and the renewable energy sector is predicted to expand hugely in the years ahead and Nigg is perfectly positioned to capitalise.’
