Siemens’ latest partnership with Associated Ports to build an offshore wind turbine factory in Hull signals an expanded renewable energy expansion drive by the company that could create up to 2,000 jobs.
The Germany-headquartered company plans increase the headcount at its renewable energy business by nearly a third, its CEO Rene Umlauft revealed in an interview with Bloomberg this week.
Its renewable energy business has grown to nearly ten times the size it was in 2004; according to Umlauft, and it plans to maximise its orders this year by at least ten times what they stand at now.
The company has already voiced its intention to become one of the top wind energy equipment manufacturers by 2012, having tripled its wind research and development budget in the last two years.
It signed a memorandum of understanding with Associated British Ports yesterday on the proposed Green Port Hull development at Alexandra Dock in the Port of Hull.
The two partners agreed to work together to develop plans for the construction of the wind turbine factory and export facility with the aim of executing definitive agreements in 2011, Siemens said in a release.
Siemens employs around 16,000 people in the UK and generated revenues of £4.1bn last year.
