Thin-film photovoltaic manufacturer Masdar PV has built a mammoth 6MWp solar park in partnership with Germany-based solar plant constructor Beck Energy.
The project, which incorporates 65,000 Masdar PV solar modules and covers a 30 hectare site in Luckenwalde, 50km south of Berlin, is big enough to power around 2,200 large households.
Set to become a model for future solar plants, the first smaller follow-up solar projects to be constructed in its mould are already underway, the companies said.
The project may also have potential applications in the development of Masdar City, as Masdar PV is a subsidiary of the developer of Abu Dhabi’s next green city.
‘We have created a reference project here for future utility-scale photovoltaic power plants and for our Masdar PV product,’ said Masdar PV CEO Frank Wouters.
‘We are convinced that large-scale plants of this type will make an important contribution to the local and regional diversification of the energy mix.’
The new plant signals the beginning of a new collaboration between Masdar PV and Beck Energy, which is set to change its name to Belectric, according to the company’s managing director Bernhard Beck.
‘The Masdar PV modules are very well suited for installations this type of large-scale projects because they offer an excellent cost-benefit ratio,’ he said.
Abu Dhabi is the second largest city in the United Arab Emirates, which with the sixth largest oil reserves in the world, is making increasing efforts to move away from its oil rich heritage.
In testament of the Emirates’ growing commitment to green energy, the region’s municipal system is due to unveil 17 energy efficient and sustainable projects in Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality, and the Western Region Municipality.
